Codice fiscale when buying property in Italy: a practical guide
The codice fiscale is Italy's tax identification code. A foreign buyer will normally need it well before receiving the keys – for contract and tax data, the notarial transaction and many practical aspects of ownership. It is easy to underestimate and just as easy to confuse with a string calculated by an unofficial website. The codice fiscale identifies a person in dealings with Italian authorities and in tax-relevant processes. It is not a residence permit, proof of tax residence or an Italian VAT number. Obtain it before a binding proposta or preliminary contract.
